UCSD Cares Archives

Initiated by students and staff after 9/11, UCSD Cares is an annual event held by the UCSD Cares Student Organization, the Center for Student Involvement, the UCSD Bookstore, campus departments and other volunteers to provide contributions for local San Diego non-profits through donations, fundraising, and service projects. In addition, UCSD Cares has responded to the 2003 Cedar fires and the 2005 hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

UCSD Cares 2009

In 2009 UC San Diego Cares implemented an initiative to raise funds for one main beneficiary. Together with the community, we raised over $13,000 for the Rady's Children Hospital through the course of the week. This was by far our most significant accomplishment to date.

UCSD Cares 2008

Students, faculty and staff contributed over:

  • $2,700 in donations to local charities
  • 350 hours volunteering
  • 280 people registered for future service projects
  • 540 people requested more information about service opportunities on campus
  • 40 people participated in arts and craft projects to benefit the community

  • Over 1000 participated in UCSD Cares
  • $2858.95 in general monetary donations
  • $1001.24 - bookstore donations to the UCSD Free Clinics
  • 2000 care packages for Virginia Tech
  • 500 signatures for the Virginia Tech banner
  • 301 inches of hair donated for Locks of love
  • 181 paper carnations for La Jolla nursing home
  • 144 clothing donations
  • 118 canned good/packaged food
  • 126 hygiene products
  • 97 picture frames for Evergreen nursing home
  • 65 paper cranes for the VA hospital
  • 61 Quilt Squares for Camp Kesem
  • 52 letters written to the legislators for animal rights
  • 37 signatures for a card to the VA hospital
  • 35 coloring books for the Rady Children's hospital
  • 16 toys donated to St. Jude Children's hospital
  • 14 placemats for the Ronald McDonald house
  • 10 nails hammered to raise awareness about Habitat for Humanity

  • 689 clothing and miscellaneous donations for Brother Benno's in Oceanside

  • 388 pledges to CalPIRG
  • 360 inches of hair donated to Locks of Love
  • 353 students signed up for future volunteer opportunities
  • 340 paper roses to donate to La Jolla Nursing Center
  • 174 picture frames for the ALS association
  • 115 paper tulips for San Diego Youth and Community Center
  • 67 student organizations, campus centers and departments participated throughout the week
  • 54 accessories
  • 42 Koi Fish flags made for San Diego Children's Hospital patients
  • 32 gift bags for Children's Hospital in North County
  • 27 toys

  • 6 "Happy Spring" cards made for La Jolla retirement community

The following tallies illustrate the success of the second annual UCSD Cares week-long community service campaign presented by the Associated Students, Student Organizations and Leadership Opportunities Office (SOLO), UCSD Bookstore and University Events Office. The 2nd annual UCSD Cares Week.
UCSD shows San Diego just how much UCSD cares contributing $3,500 a window-full of donations and more to local charities during UCSD Cares 2003!

  • 2,600 meal points, (translating to $995 donated to local food pantry, counted in $ donated)
  • 1,107 Clothing items
  • 691 Decorated lunch bags for TJ Meal Sacs and AIDS patients
  • 550 books (240 approximated for Indonesian assn. Book drive)
  • 217 signatures on cards for Alumni in the military overseas
  • 184 Hand made cards for AIDS Patients

UCSD Cares 2002

The 1st annual UCSD Cares Week.
More than 150 volunteers signed up for future service projects and over 1,000 contributors/partipants were involved in this campaign. Thank you for showing San Diego how much UCSD Cares!

  • 791 articles of clothing
  • 377 handmade cards for homebound HIV/AIDS patients
